![]() ![]() How to listen beyond the "audio quality" and listen to different aspects of the sound. So this got me used to listening for errors in a different kind of way.īetween these things, it taught me how to listen to sound differently. On top of that, when my teacher was training me how to teach, the way her studio was situated was such that I could not directly face the student while observing her - I was off to the side or sometimes even behind the student. I also listened a lot to old recordings of opera singers from the early 1900s - so people like Caruso, Mattia Battistini, etc. (My teacher also did the same thing before Skype came around.) Keep in mind, the phone quality back then was less than what we have now. So what we did is lessons over the phone. When I first started teaching, I sometimes had people who were interested in lessons but were far away, and it was before Skype was around. You have brought up good points here, but I just want to add one thing, partly because of my unique scenario and experience with Skype lessons. But if skype is the best option you have, it's totally worth doing. Ultimately, I think if you have access to quality in-person lessons, those are an overall better deal especially for beginners. It is also definitely important to have a good mic and camera, since you can only be instructed based on what the mic picks up. Which means you either have to have good enough ears to sing mostly a cappella or have good enough piano skills (and access to a piano) to accompany yourself for vocalises and possibly repertoire. One thing I've noticed is problematic with Skype is that lag makes it hard to sing together with a piano in real time. If your technique and ears aren't that good yet, you'll get more out of an in-person lesson that makes good use of demonstration and physical modeling. I also personally think skype lessons are most effective for intermediate/advanced singers who can self-correct to a certain extent and just need to a teacher to guide them. ![]() They're not ideal, but they're far better than having no lessons at all. ![]()
